ATTC Classroom丨Summary of the differences between national and European standards for automotive signal lights
2025-04-28 10:11:16

GB 5920-2024 "Optical Signaling Devices and Systems for Automobiles and Trailers" was released on September 29, 2024 and will be officially implemented on July 1, 2025. This article provides a brief comparison and summary of the national standard GB 5920-2024 with the European standard regulation UN R148.01. I hope it will be helpful to you in the national standard and ECE certification.

1. Light distribution performance:

Light intensity in the direction of the reference axis of a single lamp (unit: candela)

2. Minimum light intensity requirements within the range of light distribution angle (unit: candela).

3. Minimum light distribution angle range

4. Chromaticity performance

brief summary

The above yellow shading is the difference between GB and ECE, and we can see that in fact, the content requirements of the national standard and the European standard are similar. In addition, our national standard also has its own characteristics, such as A2 variable light intensity front lamps, such as brake light apparent surface area requirements, etc. Therefore, enterprises should carefully distinguish the differences in the development process to successfully pass the product certification.

6. Transition period requirements for the implementation of the new version of the GB 5920-2024 standard for signal light devices and systems

From the date of implementation of this standard, the light signal devices and systems used in the new type approval automobiles and trailers such as front lights, rear position lights, turn signal lights, profile lights, parking lights, daytime running lights, rear license plate lighting devices, rear fog lights, slow running lights, side sign lights, and light signal projection units shall be implemented in accordance with this document.

The reversing lights and brake lights for new type approval shall be implemented from the 19th month from the date of implementation of this document.

For automobile and trailer optical signaling devices and systems that have passed type approval, they will be implemented from the 37th month from the date of implementation of this document.

For models that have newly applied for type approval, it will be implemented from the 37th month from the date of implementation of this document.

For models that have received type approval, it will be implemented from the 37th month from the date of implementation of this document.

7. GB 5920-2024 Signal light devices and systems need to make up for the difference:

Position light with logo light, supplementary measurement of light distribution when the logo light is turned off (logo light can be controlled separately); S1 and S2 brake lights need to be supplemented with the visual surface area; S4 brake lights need to be supplemented with the minimum value; The reversing lights of M1 vehicles need to be supplemented with the distribution of road light intensity. The reversing lights of the LED light source are re-tested according to the new version of the standard; Class 5 side turn signals are retested according to the new version of the standard; turn signals with sequential opening need to be supplemented with the requirements of sequential opening; Class 2b turn signal lights need to be supplemented with the minimum value; License plate lights for new energy vehicles need to be retested in accordance with the new version of the standard.

8. GB 5920-2024 Implementation requirements for signal light device and system certification

The light signal devices and systems used in automobiles and trailers such as front positions, rear positions, turn signals, profile lights, parking lights, daytime running lights, rear license plate lighting devices, rear fog lights, slow running lights, side sign lights, and light signal projection units will be implemented from July 1, 2025; For new commissioned products for reversing lights and brake lights, it will be implemented from January 1, 2027. For automobile and trailer optical signaling devices and systems, certified products will be implemented from July 1, 2028. For newly commissioned models and certified models, it will be implemented from July 1, 2028.

From July 1, 2028, the certificate conversion work will be suspended if the certificate conversion work is not completed within the time limit (except for the after-sales maintenance spare parts certificate of discontinued models), and the old standard certification certificate will be revoked if the certificate conversion work is not completed within three months.

epilogue

If the vehicle needs to enter the Chinese and European markets at the same time, it needs to meet the requirements of GB 5920-2024 and UN R148.01 respectively, which may involve double testing or design adjustments (such as the light distribution design of the lighting module). It is recommended to refer to the specific regulatory text, or consult with Zhejiang ATTC International certified engineers.
